She in fact did have the much-dreaded disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It was triple negative breast cancer, which is a very aggressive form of breast cancer,” said Zylo.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) derives from the fact that the cancer tests negative for three receptors that fuel most breast cancers. These receptors are known as estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), and HER2 proteins. Not only is TNBC hard to detect, it is also extremely aggressive and prone to rapid spread and growth. Furthermore, it has a high likelihood of returning within a few years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zylo finished her treatment less than a year after her diagnosis. By August 2020, she was in remission.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I’m currently cancer free and have been for several years,” said Zylo. “I count my blessings for that, especially given the nature of triple negative breast cancer.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cancer does not run in Zylo’s family, and Zylo’s breast cancer is the only confirmed cancer case in her family. Dense breast tissue like Zylo has makes breast cancer particularly challenging to detect.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I tell women all the time, if you have dense breast tissue as I did, you really have to advocate for yourself,” she said. “It’s not always found just with a mammogram. She stepped into the role rather naturally just six years ago, and describes it as life-changing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"Being town clerk and manager ignited something in me that I didn't really know I was lacking,\" Taylor said. \"It really was a self-discovery moment, and it has since given me a new identity. There's no better feeling than knowing the work that I'm doing for this town is to make it better and to help fulfill the lives of the people in this community and those who will visit it.\"\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very rural Millersburg is the smallest municipality in Elkhart County, with a humble population of a little over 950 people and, by all accounts, it is highly trafficked. Whether by buggy, car, or, soon, on foot. Goshen is its nearest city, and the town is currently working to improve connectivity and pedestrian access from downtown up to the park.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"It is rewarding work, and I've met so many amazing people,\" Taylor said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public service in a small community puts town officials in direct contact with residents and their needs, wants, and concerns. In her role as town manager and clerk\u002Ftreasurer, Taylor has learned the importance of patience and understanding, and she continues to aim to accommodate and address the needs of the community.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millersburg is surrounded by rich farmland and an expansive Amish community and, as the town's website implies, offers something for everyone. The town's claim to fame is its sole restaurant, Pizza Depot, and what Taylor calls the gemstone of the town — Cook Station Park, a vibrant haven offering disc golf, walking paths, basketball courts, and recreational areas for community members to gather.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"Cook Station Park has really been something that we are trying to grow and to better,\" Taylor said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This push for growth is made possible through a new grant awarded by the Indiana Department of Health. With money and incentive to grow, the park has become the small town's number one priority.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"We keep trying to add new infrastructure and bring in new ideas to make it more appealing, and so we have been working to improve our connectivity in Millersburg,\" Taylor said. \"In practice, we're trying to find a better way to get the downtown connected to the park.\"\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A close-knit community like Millersburg gives town officials purpose, as residents and officials work closely together, fostering a more honest and communal connection. In a small town where everyone knows everyone, the work feels more meaningful. A resident isn't just a neighbor on the north side of town, they're likely a family member, friend, or distant relative. Taylor and her dedicated team of town officials work closely and efficiently to handle concerns as they arise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"We just do a really good job here in Millersburg. Being such a small municipality and not having many employees, we all know our roles and we do it well,\" Taylor said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the support of her community year after year, Taylor's elected position has given her a richer sense of identity, a closer connection to the community, and the prospect of a forever home in Millersburg.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"My dad grew up here, I grew up here, that kind of thing. His parents were from here, all that, and I'm sure there's a lot of that in Millersburg,\" Taylor said. \"There's generations of farmers and families that have been here forever. The ribbon cutting was attended by city officials, business leaders, and community members who have all been looking forward to the completion of this project.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It’s one of those surreal moments where we’re going to be able to see what a park can do to change the lives of so many. I’m so excited to be able to cut this ribbon, embrace our community, and allow everyone with all abilities to be able to come play at Normain Park,” Mishawaka Parks Superintendent Phil Blasko said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miracle Field is a baseball field designed with inclusivity at the forefront, giving residents of Mishawaka and the surrounding areas a chance to play a game regardless of age or ability. Accessibility features include communication boards in the dugouts and throughout the park, and areas in the park that are sensory-friendly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is part of Mishawaka’s continued efforts to make sure all of its residents can enjoy everything the city has to offer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Everyone should feel welcome. Everyone should belong, and we want to make sure that happens in all of our parks. However, a new downtown Valparaiso business set to open this summer is ready to prove that two can be better than one, even in the world of golf. Alpen Haus &amp; The Golf Lodge is bringing together authentic German cuisine and indoor golf simulators under one roof, creating a one-of-a-kind destination in the heart of the city.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alec Emmons, co-founder of Alpen Haus &amp; The Golf Lodge, describes the origins of their business prior to this new location.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We have a location out in Lake Tahoe, and it’s just The Golf Lodge. We started it up about two and a half years ago as a cocktail bar and indoor golf simulator for friends and family members of all ages to hang out,” Emmons said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emmons grew up in Chesterton. His fiancée, Tatjana Hess, grew up in Stuttgart, Germany. She reflected on her lifelong dream as a kid, where she would open a German restaurant alongside her father. Today, she serves as a co-founder of Alpen Haus &amp; The Golf Lodge alongside Emmons.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“When Alec and I were looking for a spot for The Golf Lodge, we came across the old Aftermath location and Be Good Juicerie,” Hess said. “It looks like two different storefronts, but our new location has enough room for both in one space.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two figured that there was no better place to open up a second location than Valparaiso. With not many European cuisine spots in the area, this brought The Gold Lodge and Alpen Haus into one. Both brands combined quickly, and as Emmons said, the rest was history.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to have a welcoming atmosphere for any of our guests that come in. Growing up with small business is in my blood, because my grandparents started the Water Way Pool in Portage back in the 1980s,” Emmons said. “We want them to feel at home when they come into Alpen Haus &amp; The Golf Lodge. We want them to play on the simulators for hours at a time, enjoy football games, or the Masters tournament on the big screen. I think that with Valpo too, it's such a tight-knit community, and other businesses are supportive of one another.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One business that has played a huge part in this new location project is Chester Inc. In fact, Emmons recalled when his grandfather built the original Water Way Pool &amp; Spa over 40 years ago, Chester was there to bring that project to life. Several generations later, and the company is working with Emmons directly on a brand new endeavor.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Chester has been really easy to work with. They have made the process very streamlined,” Hess said. “Anytime we have a question, we’re able to call any of them. This opened up a weekend of premier play heading into the second half of the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s (LPGA) qualifying Epson Tour. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Four Winds Invitational, and to mark the occasion, the tournament returned to Blackthorn for the first time since 2020. The tournament attracted 144 athletes representing over 20 countries to South Bend.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It feels great to have the Four Winds Invitational return to Blackthorn,” said Tim Firestone, CEO of Blackthorn Operating Group. “We have invested a lot of blood, sweat, and tears over the years into this event, and it feels great to have it return.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Four Winds Invitational is a favorite summer event in South Bend and the surrounding region. The free-to-attend tournament gives the public a chance to see athletes competing at the top of their game, and the influx of visitors means South Bend’s dining, hospitality, and tourism sectors get a nice boost in visibility and business. The tournament also produces a large donation for Beacon Children’s Hospital every year.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It feels awesome to be a part of giving back to the community and seeing exactly what the funds are being used for each year,” Firestone said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heading into the tournament, Mexico’s Lauren Olivares led a close Race for the Card followed by United States’ Kaleiya Romero, who was less than three points behind. Previous Four Winds Invitational champions Leah John and Kim Kaufman also returned to the tournament for a chance to accumulate more points. Thirty rookies made their debut during this year’s Epson Tour. For spectators and Blackthorn staff alike, the excitement surrounding the Four Winds Invitational is palpable. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“There is a lot of coordination and planning that goes into hosting a professional golf tournament. We worked very closely with Four Winds and their team in ensuring the event goes smoothly,” Firestone said. “Hotels, restaurants and others benefit from having the players, families and the Epson Tour in South Bend for an entire week.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Sunday’s round came to a close, Haylee Harford Sanchez was named this year’s Four Winds Invitational champion, shooting 15 under par. On her heels were Megan Streicher and Liqi Zeng, shooting -13 and -11, respectively. As the Epson Tour moves towards its championship tournament in October, the Race for the Card is still neck-and-neck.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I'm really excited for the next couple tournaments. It's an incredible experience to have a chance to earn my card. The courses are getting better and better. This week was a beautiful golf course. The NSA World Series Opening Ceremonies is created in partnership with the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority (CVA).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We’ve got 135 teams that registered for this week,” said Jimmy Nelson, director of sports for the South Shore CVA. “We’re proud to host it, and hope to keep it going for many years to come.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSA World Series week began with the skills competition on Tuesday, July 14. On Wednesday, July 15, pool play games commenced to help create the bracket. At the NSA World Series Opening Ceremonies, all of the teams participate in a small parade through downtown Crown Point before gathering around the Franciscan Health Amphitheatre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Horton, president and CEO of the NSA, is thrilled to celebrate the NSA World Series Opening Ceremonies for another year in Crown Point.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We always love having it here. We have a great partnership with the South Shore CVA and the local facilities in the area. It’s a pleasure to work with all of them on this event,” Horton said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horton considers the parade to be the highlight of the tournament. Not only does it allow for all the teams to come together, continue trading pins, and connect with people from other teams, but the conclusion of the event builds momentum into the bracket games to follow throughout the last three days of NSA World Series week.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“This is the part of the week where it starts to become do or die,” said Horton. “The competition throughout the bracket games is always high.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NSA World Series has several different age groups competing every year. Whether it is a rookie or veteran experience for these teams playing at this level, Horton is hopeful that many teams will be energized to not only perform well in the bracket games, but doing so for years to come.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“For some of these girls, it’s their first time coming to this event. They get a lot out of it, and we hope it pumps them up even more to continue coming back,” Horton said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other activities presented at the NSA World Series Opening Ceremonies event included a photo booth, braid bar, food vendors, beer garden, DJ, bounce houses, caricature artist, face painting, and more.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the slate of activities throughout this week helps create a better experience for the players and coaches, it also supports the NSA, South Shore CVA, and the communities of the four cities where games are being played this week for the World Series. These cities include Crown Point, Dyer, Schererville, and La Porte.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“When you’re bringing in 135 teams, a lot of these folks have never been here before. This is their first time experiencing Lake County, Indiana,” said Phil Taillon, CEO of the South Shore CVA. “They’re visiting our communities, our downtown area, our restaurants, and our attractions. Every time people visit an area, they’re learning something new about it, and that’s why it’s so exciting to bring this many people into Lake County.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taillon believes that NSA World Series week is one of the best celebrations that takes place annually in Northwest Indiana. I want them to not only have the sports memories, because we know they’re going to have those, but something even beyond that.
