Her previous experience with AT&T allowed her a base set of skills for addressing each call. She spoke more to the experience of working at the help desk.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It was a little bit different, troubleshooting internet and phone services versus troubleshooting cell phones,” Craft said. “Troubleshooting is pretty much all related to the same basic skills.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her role at the help desk, Craft moved to customer service representative, where she communicated directly to understand customers while working to find solutions to their needs. Following this, she attained her current position as a Plant and Provisioning Specialist.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day to day, Craft’s role relies on whatever people around the company need at a moment’s notice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“No two days are the same,” Craft said. “I'm kind of the middleman between different departments. There are a lot of different avenues I can go towards.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Craft’s responsibilities include attending meetings, overseeing reports and audits, updating client plant records, and working with the customer service team and technicians to help guide troubleshooting for issues that arise around the company. Her additional support helps facilitate a productive and conducive environment for each of her peers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, NITCO founded their Employee Engagement Committee (EEC), of which Craft is a part. The EEC relies on direct or anonymous communication from employees who have concerns or suggestions about aspects of the company. As a committee member, Craft works to create opportunities for improvement in various areas of the workplace. She also aids in the organization of various events throughout the year, including NITCO’s Employee Appreciation Day.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past 13 years, Craft has noticed significant growth through her work with NITCO, crediting the work environment for this.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Over the years, you learn from different co-workers and leaders. They shape how you develop,” Craft said. “A lot of them have retired since I started, but NITCO's always provided opportunities for us to learn and grow.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Craft highlighted her experience with NITCO as a clear example of a welcoming and constructive work environment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I know that everybody's like, ‘Oh, at a job, you're just a number,’ but it’s different here,” Craft said. “People actually care about each other. You just feel more valued.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since starting her position as a Plant and Provisioning Specialist, Craft has continued to strive for excellence in the company. Presently, she is taking courses online to keep up with a rapidly changing industry. For Craft, change has always been at the forefront of her job.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Technology is always changing. There are always new things to learn and ways to improve,” Craft said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While she has consistently pushed for improvement, Craft has also faced challenges of adapting to the fast pace and high pressure of her job. As an in-between for many departments, she puts her best foot forward in trying to make sure everyone is receiving the attention they need in order to resolve their problems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I don’t like to keep people waiting,” Craft said. “A lot of people come to me at once, and I just want to give everyone time to work on their issues with them. I have to prioritize things, but I still want people to feel like they’re important.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout her time with NITCO, Craft has found support through her husband and her child. She said being a mother has pushed her to be her best self every day. Outside of work, most of her time goes towards her family. This facility is a near $1.8 million investment that is expected to strengthen workforce development, improve employee safety, and prepare the next generation of licensed water operators and skilled field employees throughout Northwest Indiana.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designed as an outdoor \"mini-city,\" the training facility gives employees the opportunity to practice real-world field scenarios in a controlled environment before performing similar work in the communities they serve. The site combines classroom instruction with year-round covered practice areas and a mock street that allows employees to develop skills in production, field services, construction, and future wastewater applications.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Our team truly wanted the hands-on experience. They  want people to come in from all walks of the industry and say, ‘Here’s a lace and grace technique,’” Mount said. “To have them come here and work with those kinds of folks from other areas, other states, is exciting to see.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facility will also play an important role in supporting Indiana American Water's union workforce, including nearly 100 United Steelworkers employees.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training capabilities at the facility include excavation, shoring, locates, traffic control, tapping water mains, boring long services, confined space work, meter installation, pipe cutting, hydrant repair, and water main repair and replacement. The site was also designed with future wastewater training applications in mind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The goals are that we have the chance to train all new employees, upscale all existing employees, bring in folks from around the state and also partner with various agencies,” Mount said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mrvan, investing in infrastructure, workforce development, and skilled trades is extremely important to make subsidiaries like Indiana American Water run smoothly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I’m impressed with the investment by American Water in the workforce development of its employees. You have the United Steelworkers participating and collaborating with management in order to make a better training facility, and I think they made it perfectly clear that if a water company is successful, no one knows,” Mrvan said. “It’s when there’s failures and people don’t have water is when there’s issues. They’re doing what they need to do to invest in Gary, Indiana, and their employees in Northwest Indiana to make sure people get water.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond employee development, the center will serve as a resource for community outreach. That same month, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I found the lump myself,” she said. “I had been having these pains in my left breast too, so I called the doctor and scheduled a mammogram.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following mammogram led radiology to immediately schedule an ultrasound for further testing after detecting the possibility of cancer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The radiologist was fairly certain after reviewing the mammogram results that I had cancer,” Zylo said. “After the ultrasound he was very suspicious, but didn’t know what kind. He immediately scheduled a biopsy.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A day or so later, Zylo received the biopsy results. She in fact did have the much-dreaded disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It was triple negative breast cancer, which is a very aggressive form of breast cancer,” said Zylo.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) derives from the fact that the cancer tests negative for three receptors that fuel most breast cancers. These receptors are known as estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), and HER2 proteins. Not only is TNBC hard to detect, it is also extremely aggressive and prone to rapid spread and growth. Furthermore, it has a high likelihood of returning within a few years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zylo finished her treatment less than a year after her diagnosis. By August 2020, she was in remission.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I’m currently cancer free and have been for several years,” said Zylo. “I count my blessings for that, especially given the nature of triple negative breast cancer.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cancer does not run in Zylo’s family, and Zylo’s breast cancer is the only confirmed cancer case in her family. Dense breast tissue like Zylo has makes breast cancer particularly challenging to detect.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I tell women all the time, if you have dense breast tissue as I did, you really have to advocate for yourself,” she said. “It’s not always found just with a mammogram. You should go ahead and ask for an ultrasound too, just to be vigilant.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zylo encourages those struggling with a diagnosis to remain positive, keep fighting, and take the journey to recovery little by little.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It really is a very emotional time and it’s just learning to take things one step at a time and knowing that there's light at the end of the tunnel,” she said. “In the very beginning, I just thought I was done and I thought it was over. I thought I was going to die, but I remained resilient and positive, which are two of the core things that got me through.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To this very day, Zylo takes nothing for granted – her health, work, family, friends, community, and even the little things. She is grateful to be alive and, once again, have her health back. Their owners were able to stop by the clubhouse to pick up their prize.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It did well. A lot of people did participate and submitted really cute photos,” said Sidnie Williams, marketing assistant at Weiss Entities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cutest Pet Contest came from the desire to work in a pet-related event for residents to enjoy. While the LOV typically does a Puppy Plunge toward the end of summer, the intense heatwaves simmering through the midwest has put a temporary hold on things, as the team at Weiss wanted to keep all the residents and furry friends safe.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There’s still a chance the Puppy Plunge will happen, however. The event is just as it sounds: the puppies have a chance to cool off and enjoy a swim with other pets, chase toys, or explore the area while their human counterparts socialize and get to know their neighbors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LOV is also exploring the idea of a potential Pet of The Month to be implemented in the future. Whether or not the Puppy Plunge or Pet of The Month happens, the LOV ensures that caring for pets is a point of emphasis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We do a lot of resident events geared towards pets; we are very pet-friendly,” Williams said. “We have treats for both cats and dogs, and we like to include our pets in every aspect that we can.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the LOV, pets are more than animals; they’re part of the family.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We want to give people their dream apartment. If that includes them being able to bring their pet, no harm there,” Williams said. “I don't know many people who would choose a community that’s not pet-friendly if they do have a pet.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being open to pets is part of inclusivity for Weiss, as most people have furry friends these days. With 22 of 23 properties being pet-friendly, apartment-seekers have plenty of opportunities with Weiss to find a home that suits their needs best.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, no-pet properties were more common, even for the LOV. As more people began seeking companionship during lockdowns, the LOV saw the rise in need from its residents and transitioned into being fully pet-friendly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I think it helped a lot to show people in the industry that in order to be as inclusive as possible, which is always what we strive for,” Williams said. “There's not any sort of, ‘Oh, I really love this apartment, but it's in a non-pet friendly building. Do I give up my pet? Do I go for my dream apartment?’”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Weiss Entities does unfortunately have breed restrictions that are out of its control, the development company continues working toward inclusivity for families of all shapes and sizes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We love our furry friends and residents. While those qualifying for Hometown Heroes will have to pay the fee initially, by proving their status within the parameters, it will be credited back upon moving in.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all residents may qualify for Hometown Heroes, but everyone wins with Weiss Entities — any resident has the chance to join any of the events the company puts on each month. Each event varies in size throughout different days of the week, and there is something for every resident to enjoy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smaller events are activities with a limited number of winners, such as hiding a select number of plastic ducks around the building for residents to find. For more opportunities to win prizes while mingling with neighbors, the LOV offers bingo as well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer and winter offer larger events for inhabitants of the LOV properties. One upcoming event that the LOV team is hard at work planning is the annual Summer Bash. Previous years have had a DJ, food, raffles, and cornhole tournaments. The courtyard is expected to be full of music, drinks, and fun.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We specifically do it on a Saturday to ensure people can participate, because we want to hold appreciation for our residents in the biggest seasons,” Williams said. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of raffle prizes offered are donations from vendors in a process Williams described as a circle of appreciation. Vendors appreciate business from Weiss Entities, who appreciates the residents, and a gift is crafted for winners to take home.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“The residents ask when we’re doing a summer bash, so that's definitely one that fits the most interest, and usually is the best turnout,” Williams said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Summer Bash is a wonderful opportunity for residents to interact with neighbors, as well as communicate with the staff at Weiss. Food and games break the ice and allow people to grow comfortable within the community. It’s also an opportunity to get to know the employees who aim to support those living on the property. According to Newhard, these terms are interchangeable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some families, a wake may be held before the funeral as a more casual gathering, while the funeral is a formal setting. When it comes to preparing for the memorial service, the best bet is to keep an eye out for what the family would like. A good way to do that is to seek out the obituary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While obituaries in newspapers aren’t very common anymore, they can still be found online and exported to other sites — so if you don’t know which funeral home will be used, there should still be no trouble finding it by simply searching for the departed’s first and last name, alongside what city and state they lived in. Where and when the service will be is typically written at the bottom of the obituary, as well as any specific information, such as what to wear.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memorial services aren’t always formal. According to Newhard, trends have varied greatly over the years, and wearing a suit and tie might make you stand out.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We have some families who say, ‘Our loved one that passed away was a big Jimmy Buffett fan, everybody should wear their Hawaiian shirts.’” Newhard said. “It depends from person to person.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping an eye out for the family’s wishes might save you some trouble, but if you don’t see any specific instructions, Newhard advises dressing business casual and staying away from anything too colorful. A nice pair of slacks, a button down, or a skirt if you prefer is typically a good way to go.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for sending flowers — where to, what kind, or even how — the obituary also might clarify on this matter.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Something that we see becoming more and more standard is people saying that flowers are unnecessary. They don't want to deal with dying plants or the logistics of moving it all,” Newhard said. “They say in lieu of flowers, why don't people just bring a donation to whatever organization the deceased was a part of? Maybe they suffered from cancer, so bring donations for the American Cancer Society.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only are some families looking for donations nowadays, but flowers can sometimes be a hassle. The grieving families might not know what to do with the flowers, or they might not have enough space or hands to handle the plants. A donation to a society or cause relevant to the deceased is not only a thoughtful way to remember them but considerate of their loved ones as well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, this also varies. If you find that flowers are the way to go, trust your instincts. While each funeral home, church, or hall can differ, Newhard suggests going directly to the nearest florist, as the building holding the service often will be doing so themselves.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an outfit planned and flowers, a donation, or perhaps something else requested by the family ready, the next step is being prepared to attend the service itself. When an attendee knows what to expect, it can make a difficult day feel less daunting.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each service is different. Newhard stresses the importance of planning ahead to visitors and warns that there is no exact answer of what to expect.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“You have some families that are much more reserved. Things might be more of what you would expect out of a funeral or something somber,” he said. “Then, you might have some families that are outgoing, energetic and laid back, and it might be more relaxed.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the assumption that you’re familiar with the deceased’s loved ones, the first few moments you step into the door of a typical service will have a sign-in or register book for you to let the family know you were there. Once you’ve signed, you may pay your respects to the remains of the deceased and chat with family.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Some families might just want to get things over with. They might want you to come up, say, ‘I'm sorry, if you need anything, let me know,’ and then move along,” said Newhard. “Some families will want to sit and hear all your stories about their loved one. The program, launched in 2022, is an exciting leadership opportunity created exclusively for high school juniors. It is already turning high school students into compassionate, bright, young leaders who are making a difference in their communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juliana Cook, a student at Morgan Township High School, served as the president of the 2025-26 Junior Board of Directors class.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I was searching for a group of like-minded, teen leaders that wanted to develop their leadership skills and make change in our community, and the Junior Board program was that,” Cook said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Cook’s favorite parts of being on the Junior Board was executing their capstone project. Members had to plan, budget, and execute their project as a team, allowing them to gain real-world experience in leadership and project management.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“It was very rewarding to see how months of conversations, planning, and advertising could turn into something larger than what we could have imagined,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their Capstone project, Hearts in Motion, raised money for Play for Jake, a foundation dedicated to raising awareness and educating both parents and youth about the dangers of undetected heart conditions. The board hosted a car show and corn hole tournament, and raised more than $6,000 for the organization.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the benefits of the program is helping students develop real-life leadership skills. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones, make decisions and work with others to create meaningful change.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“As president of the 2025-26 Junior Board, I had to put myself in uncomfortable positions,” Cook said. “These included speaking in front of our board, being a decision-maker for the group, and speaking to different leaders in our community, but this led to me becoming more confident and comfortable in my leadership.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Junior Board also provides students with opportunities to learn from leaders outside of their schools and communities.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“A trip that stood out the most to me was visiting the Indiana State House, where we met with multiple state representatives, other junior boards in Indiana, and watched the Senate vote on legislation. It was fascinating to see,” Cook said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook encourages other students to apply because of the valuable lessons they can learn through the experience.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I went in blind, not knowing what to expect,” Cook said. “I came out the other side with strong leadership skills, opportunities I never would have imagined, and friends who want to make change as much as I do.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Cook’s leadership journey is just beginning, previous Junior Board member Londyn Connelly is already making an impact.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connelly served on the Junior Board during the 2024-25 school year. She loved how involved she was able to become in her community.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Cook, one of Connelly’s favorite parts of the program was the community service projects. She helped lead a project benefiting local Women’s Care Centers, where she helped gather donations and create care packages for families in need.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group collected donations to create 50 care packages for two centers that provide pregnancy resources and continued support for women and young children. The care packages focused on providing essential items for babies, including diapers, wipes, clothing, blankets, toys and soap. Through fundraising efforts and community donations, the group was able to raise nearly $5,000.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Going to the centers and directly handing them the bags that we made and seeing the joy on their faces and the director's thankfulness was the most beautiful thing. I was really encouraged to see how people do care. People who donated were putting their love and trust in us as high schoolers to do good, and we couldn't have done it without them,” Connelly said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the program, Connelly learned that leadership comes in many forms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“One thing I learned from Junior Board is that being a leader does not mean that you need to be bold and loud. You can do it quietly and have a quiet strength,” she said. “Anyone can be a leader. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room to get people's attention.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She learned the importance of listening to others and recognizing the strengths each person brings to a team.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Part of being a leader is admitting when you don't know the answer and humbling yourself,” Connelly said. “Sometimes, you will be strengthened when you listen and take everyone's thoughts into consideration. For different circumstances, people are going to have different strengths and, in the end, everyone is stronger by using their unique strengths.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Connelly loved the trips they went on, she recognized that sometimes the best way to make a difference starts in her own community.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“I love listening to people and learning from people,” she said. “Some of the most meaningful lessons that I learned and experiences that I had were actually when we just stayed in our town. It was wonderful to listen to leaders who might have a small role, but they impact people so much.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like her peers, Junior Board taught Connelly to embrace confidence, even if it’s a little scary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Junior Board truly changed my perspective on so many things,” Connelly said. “It made my priorities better, gave me encouragement to not be afraid to do things, to not be afraid to apply or try things. Often I wouldn’t speak up because I was afraid of rejection, then I realized that rejection is not even close to the end of the world.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connelly is attending Purdue University and working toward earning a double major in French and communications. She credits the lessons she learned through Junior Board with helping her earn a scholarship that covers her full tuition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“One of the lessons I learned most from being part of the Junior Board is that it's best to say yes to many opportunities. Now, she lives her life dedicated to helping others through life’s greatest challenges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harden is the assistant director at Hilltop Neighborhood House, an organization that prioritizes education, childcare, and other assistance for families in need. Harden’s career began in preschool education, but while serving as an educator with Hilltop, she quickly proved herself as a leader and rose to the role she now holds.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“Growing up, my family was one of those that needed assistance with groceries and paying bills,” Harden said. “As a young child, it seemed to me like it was such a hardship for my mom and my grandmother to find these resources. To now be a part of an organization that not only makes these resources available, but that also makes them easy to reach without judgment is so inspiring to me.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harden grew up throughout various parts of Chicago, ultimately graduating from Thornton Fractional North High School. After that, she attended Purdue University Northwest, as well as Ivy Tech Community College, where she received degrees in child development and early childhood education.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harden’s nieces attended Hilltop as toddlers, and though they spent only a short amount of time in the program, the impact it had on their lives was meaningful. When Harden heard of an opening in Hilltop’s childcare program, she applied. She was looking for a change from the work she’d been doing for several years prior, and she was familiar with the organization’s excellent work. She was hired, and very quickly was able to excel at every role she was given.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“To be a part of a program that genuinely cares about each and every person in our community, no matter who they are, where they live, or what they need means everything to me,” Harden said. “I'm a part of a program where families don't have to choose between feeding their family and paying the light bill. Both of those things can happen with a little bit of help from the community, so being a part of that fills my cup with so much joy every single day.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hilltop has helped Harden live her life in service to her community – an act which has given her immense joy and fulfillment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“We have our hunger relief programs, which consist of our food pantry, our mission kitchen, and a mobile pantry unit,” Harden said. “We also have a bookmobile that goes out into the different communities to mostly seniors or persons with disabilities. We have a community garden as well. Having all of those different programs and the community feel of Hilltop is what drew me back to it when I was looking for change in my career. Now, here we are, 10 years later. Hilltop was the first place that I taught preschool, and I fell in love with it. But the real magic of Hilltop, I think, is the community feel you get from whatever program you're in. It feels natural and not forced. They are here to help the community better itself each and every single day.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harden’s passion for childhood education and community assistance is rooted in her own experience as well as her family. Her grandmother is a retired preschool teacher and the first person to plant the idea of education into Harden’s mind. She used to assist her grandmother in the classroom, and she realized how naturally the love of the environment felt for her. As a preschool teacher herself, Harden focused on creating a safe, nourishing space for young minds to grow in love and learn to be themselves without judgment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“My two sisters are some of my greatest motivators,” Harden said. \"It's been three of us against the world since we were in diapers, so they are truly my support system, and they are consistently my biggest cheerleaders. I have so many wonderful examples of working women in my life.
